The Last of Us Part 1 Video Compares Horse Riding Scene from PS4 Version to PS5 Remake

Some may find it hard to believe that The Last of Us is nearly a decade old, having been released for PlayStation 3 in 2013 and PlayStation 4 the following year. While the PS4 version arguably still holds up pretty well after eight years, the upcoming The Last of Us Part 1 will let it take full advantage of the PlayStation 5’s improved hardware.

The Last of Us Part 1 arrives on PS5 in September, but Naughty Dog recently offered fans a sneak peek at the upcoming remake. The developer tweeted a short video showing a comparison of the same scene in the PS4 and PS5 versions. And while Twitter’s video compression makes some of the graphical changes harder to notice, a few improvements stand out.

The scene in question features protagonist Joel on horseback, following and talking to another character ahead of him. One of the first changes that jump out about The Last of Us Part 1 is the animations. The PS4 version of Joel sits rigidly on the back of his horse, right arm held away from his body. Meanwhile, his posture is much more relaxed in the PS5 remake, and his body bounces along with the horse’s gallop in a way that looks much more fluid and natural.

The lighting has also been overhauled, creating a much clearer contrast between light and shadow. Additionally, developers appear to have adjusted the scene’s color pallet, muting some of the green shades in a much more photorealistic way. Viewers will likewise notice that the remake’s developers modeled the foliage in much greater detail, particularly on the grass lining either side of the road. While Twitter is not the ideal platform for sharing high-definition video, The Last of Us Part 1 still looks like a real improvement over the PS4 version of the game.

Of course, while these differences are noticeable if one takes the time to look for them, it’s debatable how much these graphical upgrades meaningfully contribute to the game. Last month, an animator from developer Naughty Dog pushed back against some fan’s accusations that The Last of Us Part 1 was just a cash grab. And while the developer’s care and addition to detail are apparent in today’s video, better lighting and smoother animations might not be enough to convince everyone that The Last of Us is worth buying a second time.

Still, Naughty Dog promised that The Last of Us Part 1 would feature enhanced gameplay in addition to the audio-visual improvements. Therefore, it may be worth withholding judgment until after the game is out. Either way, the remake offers some good news for PC gamers, with The Last of Us finally coming to PC after almost a decade of PlayStation exclusivity.

The Last of Us Part 1 releases for PS5 on September 2, 2022. A PC port is also in development.
