Skyrim Mod Adds Ladder Climbing Animation, Plus More

The Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrim is a pretty immersive game as it is, but there are ways to make it more immersive, such as with this add-on.

Immersion is a key part of gaming, no matter what the genre may be or how old the titles are. The Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrim is certainly an example of this, and in fact it is considered one of the most immersive open world games out there. The reasons for this are many, but its expansive realm, in-depth lore, and hundreds of hours of gameplay play a key part in this immersion. However, it’s by no means perfect, and modders are forever adding that extra bit to really engross players.

Take “EVG Animated Traversal” as an example. This is a new mod for Skyrim created by Everglaid which adds new animations into the game that specifically pertain to things like climbing and vaulting. When installed, players will be given contextual prompts, such as being able to climb over ledges, leap over walls, or squeeze through tight spaces. It even makes it possible for the Dragonborn to now physically climb up ladders, which is something that Bethesda doesn’t seem to implement in any of its games.

The description on Nexus Mods says that this add-on was inspired by more puzzle-based games, including resident Evil, and is intended to help expand “complex level design related to non-linearity.” There are already a ton of excellent mods for Skyrim, many of which go to great lengths to really improve on the vanilla formula that players have been immersing themselves in for the better part of 11 years. Everglaid specifies that their mod doesn’t make it possible to actually climb otherwise unclimbable things in the game, so it doesn’t turn the game into something like Dying Light.

Despite its age, the game is still as popular now as was when it first launched more than a decade ago. Skyrim was one of the top selling games of May. Much of this may be down to the fact that Bethesda continues to put out updated versions as new console generations emerge. Last year saw the arrival of the Anniversary Edition, showing that the studio is evidently getting as much mileage out of its 2011 epic as it can.

On top of that, The Elder Scrolls 6 still feels years away. With Starfield due out next year, Bethesda is putting a lot of its efforts into its upcoming sci-fi title. Of course, millions are still playing Skyrimand the modding community has many creative and talented people, so the general lifespan of the game is continuing to be expanded.

The Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrim – Anniversary Edition is out now for PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X.
