Killzone VR in Development for PSVR 2

Details emerge regarding a Killzone VR game initially planned for the first PSVR that could now be in development for the PSVR 2.

The PlayStation VR headset opened up new possibilities on PlayStation consoles, but few would claim that the first PSVR headset truly lived up to its potential. The limitations of the PS4 hardware and the still few VR game developers held the PSVR back. Sony’s now hoping that the PSVR 2 headset will build on what the original started, meaning more prominent franchises coming to VR. One of those games could be a virtual reality adaptation of Killzoneif rumors are to be believed.

GAMERANT VIDEO OF THE DAY

Tea Killzone VR rumor comes from Bryan Paul in the latest video from PSVR Without Word. Paul has previously shared early information regarding PSVR news and is back with details regarding the development of a Killzone VR game. While Paul doesn’t know for a fact whether a Killzone VR game is currently in development, he has details about an older Killzone project that he now believes could have become a PSVR 2 game release.

Killzone VR is described to have begun as a game for the original PSVR made by Supermassive Games. Supermassive had just wrapped up a series of PSVR games including Until Dawn: Rush of Blood, The Inpatientand Bravo Team between 2016 and 2018. Sony had also apparently contracted Supermassive to make Killzone VR during these years, building off its experience with both the PSVR headset and remastering Killzone for the PS3. Unfortunately, by 2019, Sony was unhappy with the project and canceled it.

Paul says that while Supermassive’s development Killzone VR was ended, Sony didn’t abandon the project. It instead shifted development of Killzone VR internally. That’s where Paul’s confidence in what’s happened ends and where he begins to speculate. He goes on to say that if internal development of Killzone VR started in 2019, it’s possible that the project could be planned to be a launch game for the PSVR 2.

The PSVR 2 doesn’t currently have a launch date, nor does it have any confirmed launch games. It does have games planned for the platform, though, like Horizon Call of the Mountain and Among Us VR. Killzone VR, if it exists, would undoubtedly prove to be a strong seller and showcase for the PSVR 2’s capabilities. It makes a lot of sense, in that regard.

VR enthusiasts may not have to wait long for confirmation of the rumor, either. Sony announced this past week that it plans to talk about PSVR 2 games during its upcoming June 2 State of Play event. Yew Killzone VR isn’t at the event, then the rumor’s reliability is in question. Still, a Killzone VR project is an exciting idea that Sony will hopefully follow through on eventually.

Killzone VR is rumored for the PSVR 2.
