Fallen Order 2 Is Reportedly Skipping Xbox One, PS4

During his premium Giant Bomb show Grubbsnax, VentureBeat reporter Jeff Grubb claimed Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order 2 will launch only on next-gen consoles and PC, leaving PlayStation 4 and Xbox One users in the lurch.

Per VGC, Grubb explained the game has been delayed until a 2023 release, making a launch on older generations less tenable. “star wars jedi 2 is going to be new-gen only, where it’s PS5, Xbox Series X and S, and then of course PC,” Grubb said. “One of the reasons that they’re going to be able to do that is because it’s not coming out until 2023. This game is for sure now not coming out until 2023.”

Although disappointing to those who thus far can’t get their hands on a PlayStation 5 or Xbox Series, there are upsides to Respawn Entertainment and Electronic Arts’ decision — namely, no longer needing to worry about making the gameplay and graphics suitable for cross -generation consoles. “It makes it easier to just disassociate yourself with those millions of PS4s and Xbox Ones out in the world when you are in 2023 and you’re going to have several months of making it very easy to get an Xbox Series X, probably a few months before now and then when it’s actually okay to get a PS5,” he said. “And then at the same time you can take advantage of it and do something that feels new.”

In January, reports circulated that star wars jedi 2 would get a game reveal on the unofficial Star Wars day, May 4, with an expected release sometime in Q4 2022. Video game industry insider Tom Henderson said at the time that “following today’s announcement that LEGO Star Wars will release April 5th, a May 4th reveal now seems incredibly likely.” However, Grubb’s recent assertions make this previous release window seem unlikely.

Very little is known about the upcoming release. Another industry insider, Bespin Bulletin, claimed in January that the sequel to Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order would have a different sub-title, though it will keep the star wars jedi prefix. They also claimed the newest game in the series “will feature returning characters from its predecessor, some with larger roles, along with exciting existing Star Wars characters that weren’t featured in the first installment.”

Several games set within the Star Wars universe are currently in active development. LucasFilm Games and Amy Hennig, famous creator of the Uncharted series, recently announced their joint effort in an upcoming cinematic Star Wars project. This is Hennig’s return to the franchise following the cancellation of Project Ragtag. In the press release, Hennig enthused about working within the Star Wars universe again. “I’ve often described how seeing Star Wars in 1977 essentially rewired my 12-year-old brain, shaping my creative life and future indelibly,” Hennig said in the news release. “I’m elated to be working with Lucasfilm Games again to tell interactive stories in this galaxy that I love.”
