Ubisoft Shuts Down Multiplayer, Online Services for 90 Games

Ubisoft announced that 90 of its games spread across multiple platforms have lost access to their online services and multiplayer, effectively rendering them offline-only experiences.

As TheGamer reports, the games span PS3, PS4, PC, Xbox 360, Wii, Wii U, OnLive, Mac, and iOS, and include high-profile titles from popular franchises including Assassin’s Creed, Far Cry, Just Dance, Might & Magic , Rainbow Six, Rayman, Settlers, and Splinter Cell.

The online components lost depends on the specific game, all of which can be found listed on Ubisoft’s website. Pretty much all online features you’d expect are gone, though, including online multiplayer, player statistics, in-game news feeds, in-game rewards (which can still be unlocked but won’t be received), and unlockable content (ULC ) on PC (ULC on consoles should remain available).

Any games using Ubisoft Connect services also have lost access to Units and Challenges, which means you can no longer earn Units by completing Challenges.

All the games affected by this shut down are older titles, but it acts as a reminder that games accessing features in the cloud are not going to be available forever. It begs the question of what will happen to all the digital games we are buying today, for platforms that will inevitably be replaced in the future? Sony’s actions last year regarding access to PSP, PS Vita, and PS3 digital stores and the confusion that can be caused gives us a hint as to what to expect.
