10 PS3 Games That Still Hold Up In 2020

So much time has been spent hyping the up-and-coming PlayStation 5, but during its glory days, Sony’s PlayStation 3 has also witnessed tons of great games from various developers and publishers. From the genre-pushing Grand Theft Auto IV to the heart-wrenching & adrenaline-pacing The Last of Usthe PS3 deserves its own place on the Mount Rushmore of the gaming industry.

Although the good old days of the PS3 are long gone in the past, it’s never going to hurt to look back at some of the most memorable titles on the console that still hold up and compete against the newest generation of games.

10 Uncharted 2

First, we have Naughty Dog’s Uncharted 2: Among Thieves from 2009, which centers the story of Nathan Drake teaming up with Elena Fisher and Chloe Frazer on a quest to find the Cintamani Stone in Nepal.

The game was so ahead of its time, aesthetically, and it’s not too exaggerating if we call it a massive step-up from its predecessor, Drake’s Fortune. Supported by Naughty Engine 2.0, Uncharted 2 snatched the Game of the Year award for its epic storytelling & breathtaking graphics. It was a major commercial success, too, with over 7 million copies shipped worldwide.

9 The Walking Dead

Considered by many as one of the greatest video games of all time, we can’t miss Telltale’s The Walking Dead episodic game from this list. Although it may not be the most realistically-looking video game you’ll see on this list, The Walking Dead was praised by many for its harsh and emotional tone of the story.

The first sequel follows Lee’s story, a former university teacher, as he tries to escape his way through the ‘walking dead’ and meets young survivor, Clementine, along the way. The game contains four seasons in total, but unfortunately, Telltale was forced to shut down for bankruptcy.

Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots might be a 2008 release, but the insane amount of details that Kojima Production put out has propelled the game to where it’s at now. Metal Gear Solid 4 is a story of revenge, depression, heartbreak, death, and frustration, and the way Hideo Kojima & Co. wrap it up beautifully will keep you engaged.

Accompanied with the upgrade version of the previous MGS 3 control mechanism, the game had definitely won the hearts of PS3 gamers & it’s proved by all the Game of the Year accolades it won upon its release.

7 Call Of Duty: Modern Warfare 3

Back to the good old days. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 is a continuation of Modern Warfare 2. It centers around the fight of Soap McTavish and Captain Prince, trying to put an end to Makarov’s evil master-plan once and for all.

Released back in 2011, after only two years after its more successful predecessor, Modern Warfare 2‘s graphic was so pinpoint yet disturbingly upsetting that it led to numerous heated discussions between parents about video game’s impact on youth’s violence. Over 6.5 million copies of the game were sold in the UK and the US alone.

Grand Theft Auto IV is the kind of underdog game you don’t want to miss, especially if you’re a fan of Rockstar’s GTA’s chaotic world. The game takes you to the daunting & gloomy life of Liberty City as you follow the journey of a former war veteran, Niko Bellic, searching for someone who’d wronged him in the past and the glory of the American Dream.

Unlike the gun-blazing & criminals-glorifying GTA V, IV was a genre-pushing game that gives you a deeper understanding of the meaning of life and family.

5 The Last of Us

Fans might have polarized views on the recent Last of Us: Part II, but everybody loved its original 2013 game. With only limited supplies and ammo, Joel, who’d lost his daughter during the Outbreak Day 20 years before the event, has to fight his way off across the country with 14-year-old Ellie to save humanity. Instead of that, he finds a whole new meaning of life, something he hasn’t had after losing his daughter.

The game scored over 1.3 million copies worldwide within the first week of its release, making The Last of Us one of the best-selling video games of all time.

4 God of War III

Next, we have God of War III from Santa Monica Studio. Surrounding the theme of revenge, you play as a Spartan demigod, Kratos, on his way of making Zeus pays for his betrayal. Graphics-wise, the god of war series never disappoints, as IGN put it best while praising Kratos’ character design, “perhaps the single most impressive-looking character ever in video games.”

Lucky for us, God of War III is available as a remastered version for PS4 gamers.

3 Resident Evil 6

Resident Evil 6 might not be the best resident Evil PS3 game out there, but it is the last on the PlayStation 3 system. The game lets players take over three protagonists: Leon Kennedy, Chris Redfield, and Jack Muller (plus Ada Wong after all the chapters are finished), finishing the puzzle of who’s the mastermind behind the world’s most significant bioterrorism attack.

Although the game possesses a superb detailed-looking graphics and disturbingly over-the-top creatures too, it was criticized negatively for its departure from the franchise’s horror roots.

2 Red Dead Redemption

Considered by many as one of the greats, the original Red Dead Redemption belongs to our list’s second place today. In this game, you are John Marston, a former cowpoke, and outlaw. He does his best to stay clean for the sake of his beautiful wife and beloved son, but John never gets to escape off his shadow. The laws order him to track his former gang mates in exchange for his family’s safety. It’s a shame that Rockstar has never released a PS4 remaster of this masterpiece.

Lastly, there is Grand Theft Auto V, probably the most hyped and selling game of the world at the moment. Contrary to the single-character gameplay of the previous title, GTA V lets you control the fate of three protagonists; Michael, Franklin, and Trevor, as they find a way to make one last big score before retiring and eliminating the enemies that have been pulling them from every direction. Even to this day, Rockstar is still actively developing the game by announcing its upcoming release for the PlayStation 5 system.
